How we rank

The rules that decide the order of books and shop prices on Lisezo, and what plays no part in it.

In short

Lisezo orders books and prices by fixed rules that apply to everyone. Nobody can buy a higher place: brands and shops do not pay for their position in a list.

Every visitor sees the same order. We do not use personal data or pages you visited before to change it.

Categories and brands: ‘Popular’

This is the default order. There are five rules, in order of weight. A later rule only counts when the earlier ones make no difference:

  1. Books with a price come first: a current shop price or a price the publisher publishes. Books without a price come last.
  2. Among those, the most popular books come first: what the most different visitors viewed over the past weeks. A click through to a shop counts twice as much as a visit, and recent days weigh more: each week counts half as much as the week after it. We count anonymously and without cookies (see the privacy statement), and visits by bots do not count.
  3. Among those, books with a current shop offer come first: an offer from a shop that Lisezo shows.
  4. Among those, books with a known designer come first.
  5. Among those, books are listed alphabetically (A–Z) by the publisher’s book name.

Books we know nothing about yet, such as new ones, therefore skip rule 2. Sales, payments and commission play no part in this order. Filtering by brand or designer only changes which books you see, not their order.

Choosing another order

With ‘Sort by’ you can choose a different order:

  • ‘Price: low to high’ and ‘Price: high to low’: by the lowest current shop price of any of its versions (per version the top offer of its shop list that is not sold out); this is the price shown with the book in the list. Without a current shop offer, the lowest price the publisher publishes for any of its versions counts instead, and the list then says so. Books without a price come last; equal prices are listed A–Z.
  • ‘Newest in the catalogue’: what was added to Lisezo most recently comes first. This says nothing about when a book came onto the market.
  • ‘Name (A–Z)’: alphabetically by the publisher’s book name.

Search

Your words are searched in the title, publisher, category and editions. A book must match all your words. The default order (‘Relevance’), in order of weight:

  1. Books whose title or publisher is exactly your search.
  2. Books from a publisher you name.
  3. Books in the category your word names (for ‘thriller’: thrillers).
  4. Other books with all your words; the better the match, especially in the title, the higher.
  5. Books that only resemble what you typed (a typo).

At an equal place, books with a cover come first, then A–Z. If your word finds nothing, we show the results for the closest word and say so.

Shop prices on a book page

For each version we only show shops that sell exactly that version (recognised by its EAN code or the publisher’s item number). The order, again in order of weight:

  1. Shops that do not have the book in stock come last.
  2. Next, the lowest price comes first, ranked by the price including VAT plus shipping. If a shop does not state its shipping costs, we rank its offer by the item price plus an assumed shipping cost: €6.95 in the euro markets, 50 kr in Denmark and 75 kr in Sweden. That offer shows only its item price and says the shipping costs are unknown. An offer from a partner seller on a marketplace (such as bol.com’s partners) counts as 2% more expensive in the order, so the shop itself comes first at a nearly equal price. A partner more than 2% cheaper still comes first.
  3. On an equal ranking price, an offer with stated shipping comes before one with assumed shipping.
  4. On an equal total price, the price we checked most recently comes first.

A price we have not been able to check for more than 48 hours is not shown. Every price says when we last checked it. The publisher’s price is shown separately, as ‘Recommended price’, and is never a shop offer.

Advertising and commission

There are no paid placements on Lisezo at the moment. If there are in future, every paid placement will be clearly marked ‘Advertisement’, with who paid for it when we know. An advertisement is kept apart from the normal order and never changes it.

Lisezo may receive a commission through links to shops when you buy something. That commission plays no part in the order: a shop that pays more is not listed higher.

Price drops

When we say a price has dropped, we always compare it with the lowest price of the same shop in the 30 days before the new price began. If we do not know all of those 30 days, we do not report a price drop. A ‘was’ price stated by the shop itself, or the publisher’s price, is never used for this.

Trending now

The ‘Trending now’ row on the home page and in categories shows books that clearly more different visitors viewed in the last 7 days than the 4 weeks before would lead us to expect. A book needs at least 5 visitors a week to qualify, and the row only appears when at least 4 books do. Payments and commission play no part here either.
